Long Island Group
The Long Island group is made up of the islands of Long, Rake, Indian, Sacrifice, Snipe, Centre, Dry and Chockle Cap. Most of these islands have been protected through the works of a local charity MICA. On the way to the Long Island Group we’ll paddle close to the seal rookery in Hells Rackets, named so as it is feared by sailors but it is a kayaker’s dream. The grey and harbour seals that inhabit the water are curious and often a dozen will swim out to meet kayakers as they approach. This islands are a gems on Nova Scotia’s coastline.
The Long Island archipelagos is just off of Heckman’s Island has great beaches and calm sheltered waters. Few dwellings and the playful seals make this a wonderful getaway. A picnic on one of these islands is something to be remembered.
